Just wondering if anyone knows if the Astina name will be kept for any markets (eg Australia) for the hatchback? Or is it going to die along with the 323 name?
I never really liked the Protege name, but after owning 2 Astina's (92 and 97) I wouldnt mind seeing the name live on. |

According to Mazda, the car will be known as the 3 in all markets except Japan where it will be the Axela.

Here in Holland it is just "Mazda3" for the sedan and "Mazda3 Sport" for the hatch. Just like our Mazda6; sedan = "Mazda6", hatchback = "Mazda6 Sport" and wagon "Mazda6 SportBreak"

I was told by the Toowoomba Mazda dealer that there will be an SP23 version with the 2.3L Mazda6 engine available from the launch. But he didnt know about the other model names.
I was told that a lot more info will be available about the Aus Maz3's in the following couple of weeks. |

Model names have been announced for Aust; and for those who do not yet know:
Base spec: Neo (2L engine) Mid spec: Maxx (2L engine); and Maxx Sport Top/Sports spec: SP23 (2.6 engine from Mazda6) They'll all just be known as Mazda3. No exterior badging (except for the SP23) to distinguish the different levels. And so it's goodbye to Astina (Hatch) and Protege (Sedan) - RIP. How about closing this thread then, eh?

That's the 2.3L engine for the SP23 (of course).
Sticky fingers.
